The Braschi Antinous
This black and white photograph captures the head of 'the Braschi Antinous', a colossal statue of the Bithynian youth dressed in the guise of Dionysus-Osiris. The sculpture was discovered in 1792 at the site of Hadrian's villa, but dates to antiquity, likely commissioned by the emperor after the youth's untimely demise. Antinous was believed to be Hadrian's lover, and was known for his extraordinary beauty. This print captures the youth's striking features, signature curls and the details of his crown (composed of leaves, ivy berries and a pinecone diadem, in ode to Dionysus).
